Saturday 6th September was dry and not too bright, not too windy, perfect for tennis and helped us complete the day with excellent tennis and the end of a successful competition.
Play began at 12 noon and continued until 5:30pm. Many thanks to Lee for all his organisation, to the umpires and line judges, and to all who turned up on the day to support the club!
Here are the highlights:-
Mens Singles – James Whitehorn v Lee Franklin
Umpire Paul Smith
“The first point set the scene for a tight match of excellent points – deep returns and well-placed shots. In both sets, James’ superior ball control won through but the score does not reflect the level of skill and competition from both players.”
The final score was:-
Winner James 6-0, 6-1
Ladies Singles – Claire Syrett v Sarah Tate
Umpire Jennie Hathrill
“Great Game! the score does not reflect the play – rallies were really good, including one that was 27 shots! One game went to 9 dueces.
In the end Claire ran out the winner in straight sets. Well done both!”
Result:-
Winner Claire 6-2, 6-1
Mens Doubles – Lee Franklin & Colin Greenbaum v Dev Kerai & Will Dennis
Umpire David Reeves
“A very enjoyable match played in great spirit. There were so many long rallies with numerous lobs and spins across the whole court. The game went to a tie break with the final score 10-8 to Colin & Lee – a pleasure to umpire!”
Ladies Doubles – Nicky Long & Sarah Tate v Lynda Davies & Claire Syrett
Umpire Gary Alford
“Cracking match to umpire, defences versus attack. In the first set Claire & Lynda were like a wall and played great tennis to take it 7-5. Second set Sarah & Nicky’s forehands started to pierce their defences, taking the set 6-3. Their attacking tennis rode into the championship tie-break and Nicky & Sarah won 10-5 – Great Match!
Result:-
Winners Nicky & Sarah 5-7, 6-3, 1-0 (10-5 tie break)
Mixed Plate – Luke Fowell & Claire Syrett v Dev Kerai & Sarah Tate
Umpire James Whitehorn
“An exciting match with lots of exciting rallies.
Big hitting from Luke and from Sarah, great matchplay from Claire, and Dev running round the back of the court like a teenager on speed.
In the end Claire & Luke had too much firepower and triumphed 6-4 6-2. A great game to watch.”
Result:-
Winners were Luke & Claire 6-4, 6-2
Mixed Doubles – Jennie Hathrill & Andrew Hawker v Nicky Long & Colin Greenbaum
Umpire Paul Smith
“Colin & Nicky benefited from the match practice of their previous finals, not giving Jennie and Andrew any quarter – taking the first set with power and placement. In the second set, a change of formation and more aggressive play from Jennie & Andrew brought them a deserved second set 6-3. The stage was set for a championship tie-break, which Nicky and Colin won through 10-3. A fine match and well done to all four players”
Result:-
Colin & Nicky won 6-0, 3-6, 1-0 (10-3 tie break)
Congratulations to all the players, here are your winners of 2021!
